ABOUT TENNESSEE RECOVERY ALLIANCE
OUR STORY
Tennessee Recovery Alliance (TRA) is a drug-user human rights advocacy organization rooted in the philosophy of harm reduction. We work to educate the community and promote the health, dignity, and rights of individuals and communities impacted by drug use. Our approach is grounded in respect and compassion—we meet people where they are, free of judgment or stigma, and support any positive change as defined by the individual.
We advocate for and implement policies, practices, and programs that reduce the harms associated with drug use, including overdose, HIV, hepatitis C, chaotic use, and incarceration. Our goal is to create a healthier, more just society through evidence-based, person-centered strategies.
Founded in 2019, TRA began as a grassroots effort with just a van and supplies—conducting mobile outreach and delivering harm reduction services across East Tennessee. In 2022, we proudly opened our first brick-and-mortar location in the heart of East Tennessee. Since then, we’ve continued to expand our reach, providing life-saving supplies, education, and support to those who need it most.
WHAT IS HARM REDUCTION
Harm reduction emphasizes tolerance, respect for the personal choices of others and respect for human rights. It favors evidence over anecdote, courage over cowardice, and doing what is right. Our message is "We love you, and respect your dignity as a human being." It means doing what has to be done to protect individual and community health in the face of opposition from all quarters because it is the right thing to do.
